HOST AN EVENT OR PRESENTATION BY
RVCCC
One of the primary strategies of our campaign is
public education. A representative of Roanoke Valley Cool
Cities Coalition can make a presentation to your group - any
group, church, school, scouts, neighborhood association, civic
club, company, business association. Our program can range
from 15 minutes to one hour. Our presentation can take a
variety of forms. CLICK HERE
for a
partial list of organizations who have hosted RVCCC presentations.
"Kilowatt Ours" - This wonderful film takes viewers on a
journey from the light switches in their homes to the coal
mines of West Virginia, and on to the solar panel fields of
Florida, as we discover solutions to America's energy
problems. The focus of this film is the peril of coal-fired
power plants, and how personal actions can make a difference
in the quest for renewable, non-polluting
energy. Southeast US Edition"
(2006 - 36 minutes) -
"National Edition"
(2007 - 55 minutes). The updated version goes into more
depth on our national energy picture and also has some
excellent new footage of local and state energy conservation
measures.

"Smart Energy Solutions" - This is the
RVCCC slide presentation about our local global warming
and energy campaign. It is presented in an interactive
environment with the audience, to encourage discussion and
learning. The full slide presentation runs about 30-45
minutes depending on audience participation, and we can
offer an abbreviated version as an introduction to RVCCC and
the "Cool Cities" campaign. |
|
"The Power of the Sun" is a
thoughtful and educational 2005 film about the science,
history, current use, and future potential of solar
power. Narrated by a very sincere and serious John
Cleese, this is an excellent introduction to what is perhaps
the most promising renewable energy solution. Running
time 55 minutes. (more

"Energy Crossroads: A
Burning Need to Change Course" - This 2007 film is
a comprehensive, provocative look at how we make and use
energy. Thorough and thoughtful, the 55 minute
presentation explains how our dependence on imported energy
and fossil fuels places our very society at risk, and what
we must do to recover from an unsustainable energy policy.

| ENERGY: Critical Choices
Ahead (1974) - What if you could turn back the clock and
know what was being said about our energy policy in 1974,
shortly after the "energy crisis". Well, you can. This 25 minute film
was produced by the US Deparment of Commerce, an effort to
educate the public about the need to change our
energy policy and reduce our reliance on foreign oil (then
about 12% of our total). It is truly amazing!
Following the film, we'll have a discussion about what
REALLY happened in the last 34 years. |

|
"We Are All Smith
Islanders" - This 30 minute film brings the issue
of global warming to Chesapeake Bay and the surrounding
area. With the plight of local fishing industry as the
launching point, this film highlights local impacts and
strategies to curb global warming. This can be
complemented by an update on legislative and local
initiatives. (more info)

Climate Change
Presentation - For those seeking a better
understanding of the science and potential impacts of global
warming, RVCCC Affiliate John Richardson is a certified
Climate Change Messenger and is pleased to offer the slide
presentation that was the basis for the Academy Award
winning documentary "An Inconvenient Truth". This
presentation will be updated with the latest information
available as the science of global warming evolves.

"The Climate of
Change" is a 15-minute film produced in 2006 by
ICLEI-Local Governments For Sustainability. With the
backdrop of a mayors conference set in Alaska, where
evidence of global warming is abundant, it tells the story
of how local governments are taking action to reduce
greenhouse emissions, rather than waiting around for state
or federal action. The on-camera commentary by mayors
from around the country makes a convincing case that local
action is a critical piece of the campaign to curb global
warming. Excellent videography and production - local
government leaders should see this film, and your group
should, too! Following the film we'll discuss the status of
actions by our local governments to reduce
emissions. |
|
"The Power of Community" - For organizations who have an
interest in local organic and sustainable agriculture as
part of the remedy for global warming, we offer a screening
of this most interesting film, (2006, 50 min.).
When the Soviet Union collapsed in the early 1990's, Cuba
lost access to most of its oil supply, an event that
created unbelievable hardships on the people. Through
personal accounts, this film tells the story of how Cuba
converted its largely export-based and mechanized
agricultural industry to a decentralized, organic,
consumer-based system . . . out of immediate necessity for
survival. (more info)

"Home Energy Conservation
and Efficiency". RVCCC
affiliate Association of Energy Conservation Professionals
offers this presentation, which provides various home
energy saving tips and emphasizes the collective impact
represented by simple low cost/no cost applications. Saving
energy will save money for the occupant but the greater
impact is when we all do these things together - then we all
have an opportunity to impact global warming, protect our
natural environment, and improve the quality of our water
and air. See www.aecp.org or email aecp@swva.net for more
information. |
|
"Green Building -
Green Business".
- This presentation explains green
building programs such as LEED, Earthcraft, and Energy
Star, and how these principles can be applied to new
construction and renovation or retrofit projects.
It also explains how companies are going “green”
in daily office practices and technology, and the business
and economic benefits of sustainable business
practices. Presented by Nell Boyle, Chair of the US
Green Building Council's SW Virginia Chapter and Director of
Sustainable Practices at Breakell Inc. General
Contractors. |

“Measuring your household carbon
footprint – a personal response to the challenge of global
warming” - This brief presentation (15-30 minutes)
covers the RVCCC household carbon footprint calculators and
explains why you should do the numbers to start the process
of reducing your impact on global warming. |
|
At all our presentations we like to give
compact fluorescent light bulbs to some or all of the
participants. We also provide a variety of handouts
that will educate attendees about what they can do in their
homes and on the road to help curb greenhouse gas emissions
and reduce global warming. |
